Southern California Blood Bank Gives Community Opportunity to Support Ukraine Through Blood Donations

Southern California Blood Bank, a division of San Diego Blood Bank, is joining blood banks across the country in providing financial assistance to those who have been impacted by the violence in Ukraine.

For every blood donation made at a Southern California Blood Bank mobile blood drive or at its new fixed site location in Irvine through April 5, the Blood Bank will make a financial contribution to UNICEF on behalf of the donor to support Ukrainian civilians who desperately need help. We invite the community to donate blood to help save the lives of local patients who rely on blood transfusions to survive traumas, maintain health and treat cancers and disease.

How can donors double their impact locally and internationally?

Eligible donors who would like to donate blood in support of this effort can register with the donation code UKRN at check-in. Your blood donation will help local hospital patients in the Southern California region. Through April 5 and for every blood donation collected, So Cal Blood Bank will make a financial contribution benefitting UNICEF's effort to support Ukrainian civilians.

To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds, and be in general good health. Eligible blood donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment online or call (844) 380-5220.

Why is So Cal Blood Bank sending financial support and not blood?

We are unable to actually provide blood products due to logistical concerns, but Blood Centers of America (BCA) has been in contact with their European Associates to discuss immediate and long-term help, and right now the biggest need is for financial support.

What is UNICEF doing to support Ukraine?

UNICEF is working with partners to reach vulnerable children and families with essential services—including health, education, protection, water, and sanitation—as well as lifesaving supplies.

Thank you for saving lives with us.
