Newport and Greater Irvine Chamber members, City of Irvine Mayor’s office, community members, hospital partners, staff, and blood donors celebrated the Grand Opening of San Diego Blood Bank’s first permanent donation location in Orange County with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Operating under the name Southern California Blood Bank (So Cal Blood Bank), the Irvine Business District Donation Location is now open Tuesdays through Saturdays and will collect hundreds of units of blood every month, potentially impacting thousands of lives in this community while giving a necessary boost to the local blood supply.
Through philanthropy and the generous support of individual financial donors and corporate sponsors, the Irvine location is fully equipped with vital resources such as Trima blood collection systems, HemoFlow devices, and blood collection supplies. Together, we connect patients to life.
In recent years, you may have seen a So Cal Blood Bank bloodmobile in Newport, Irvine, Tustin, and greater Los Angeles. That’s because So Cal Blood Bank hosts over 200 mobile blood drives each year in partnership with the community to provide lifesaving blood to patients in nearby hospitals. Patients require blood for various treatments for cancers, traumas, surgeries, and managing rare anemias and chronic illnesses like thalassemia and sickle cell disease. Every donation saves lives, and patients are grateful. Click to Watch Jamila’s Story on Youtube

This month, blood centers are celebrating National Blood Donor Month. Currently, there is a blood shortage across the nation due to the holidays, the pandemic in combination with cold and flu season, and a recurrent seasonal dip in blood supply.
San Diego Blood Bank and Southern California Blood Bank urge healthy individuals to make time to donate blood to ensure hospitals have the units they need to save local lives the very moment blood is needed.
In response to the national blood shortage, Krispy Kreme just announced that if you donate blood between January 24 – January 31 and provide proof of donation, you can stop by a participating Krispy Kreme to pick up a FREE* Original Glazed® dozen. You do-nut want to miss out on this special treat or glaze over this cool "thank you" to lifesavers.
To donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 114 pounds, and be in general good health. To book an appointment, visit scbloodbank.org/donate or call (844) 380-5220. To learn more about COVID-19 and blood donation, and read FAQs, visit scbloodbank.org/covid19.
*Offer is valid at participating Krispy Kreme US locations only for those who donate blood during 1/24 - 1/31. View details.
